Coach Mike Miello
earned a B.S. in physical education and health from the
University of Rhode Island in 1967. He obtained his Master’s
in administration and supervision (K-12) from Seton Hall
University in 1977.
He began his football coaching career at the University of Rhode
Island, where he was a football starting tight end in
1964-65.
Miello began his high school coaching career in 1967 at
Hackensack High School in New Jersey where he he was
appointed head coach in 1970. He coached his team for seven seasons
and led them to the 1971 Group four state championship.
Miello left Hackensack and took a position as athletic
director and head football coach at Ramapo High School in
Franklin Lakes N.J. from 1978-2000. In 23 seasons with
Ramapo as head football coach, he guided his team to four
N.J. state championships and four Northern Bergen
Interscholastic League titles. One hundred and forty-eight
of his players went on to play football in college including
Chris Simms, who now plays for the Tampa Bay Bucs in the NFL.
Miello moved on to Rutgers University in 2001 when
protégé Greg Schiano was hired as their head coach. Schiano
began his coaching career at Ramapo High School after
playing for Miello at Ramapo. Miello served as recruiting
coordinator/running backs coach in his first season before
taking over as the assistant to the head coach for the next three
years. His duties included recruiting and evaluation of
player personnel.
Miello was hired as head football coach at Division 111
William Patterson University in N.J. in 2006 and is
presently the head coach for 2007.
Off the field, Miello’s involvement in the community has
earned him numerous accolades. He has been inducted into the
N.J. Football Coaches Association and N.J. Interscholastic
Coaches Halls of Fame. He was named the YMCA and Unico
(Hackensack) Person of the Year in 2004. He was also the
recipient of the President Gerald R. Ford Award from the
All-American Football Foundation in 2003.
